Quagga Mussel
Dreissena bugensis
Quagga mussels are invasive bivalves that have spread through the Great Lakes, outcompeting native species and altering ecosystems. They filter vast amounts of water, which can increase clarity but disrupt food webs. Their rapid reproduction and strong attachment to surfaces make them a challenge for both nature and human infrastructure.
Plastic Pollution
Tiny plastic pieces, or microplastics, are now widespread in the Great Lakes, threatening aquatic life and water quality. Millions of pounds of plastic enter the lakes each year. These persistent pollutants can be ingested by fish and other wildlife, entering the food chain and causing harm. Reducing plastic waste is key to protecting these vital freshwater ecosystems.
Wrinkled Dune Snail
Candidula intersecta
The wrinkled dune snail is a small invasive land snail found in Michigan. Known for its pale, banded shell, it threatens local crops and natural habitats by feeding on seeds and seedlings. Its presence disrupts ecosystems and challenges agricultural health in the region.
